All Ireland Schools Cross Country Championships

On Saturday March 11th C.B.S Naas travelled to Mallusk in Co. Antrim to compete in the All Ireland Schools Cross Country Championships. Naas had one team competing in the U 15 section which included Matthew Whelan who had also qualified as an individual from the Leinster finals, so too had Shane Coffey in the U 17 age group.

The U 15 race was 3600 metres and the 8 runners on the Naas team ran a superb race to finish the second placed schools team in Ireland. WInners  were St Malachy’s Belfast while Rice College Westport were third.Matthew Whelan got off to a great start and ran a controlled race to finish in third place overall in a time of 14 minutes 29 seconds qualifying for the Irish Schools team. Matthew’s brother Harry had a high team placing with a time of 15 mins 06 secs , along with Liam Phibbs, Alan Tobin, Matthew Mc Carrick, Conor Wickham, David  Cronin and Eoin Freeman.
The most anticipated race of the day was the U17 5200 metres. This had a very strong field of many international runners and the top 8 places were guaranteed an International cap . Shane Coffey finished in fifth place in a time 20mins 58 secs to book his spot on the Irish schools team.
